Noel only came away in 1994 because Noel McClean withdrew at the last minute. Grapevine says his wife Olive would not let him travel.
Playing with clubs supplied by Noel McClean the Captain hit a 3 iron to 4 feet on a par 3 and won nearest the pin. Not bad for a bloke who had never been on a golf course...
Noel, earned his nickname "Bottle of Bud" in a nightclub in Ennis in 1995 when he told me that the "Dickhead" prancing around him had better get lost or he would be "Bottled". Very unusual reaction from one of the most level tempered men alive.
Noel looks after the "Whip" on all night sessions. He calls "Whip Time" and everybody hands over € 20. Noel managed to run a "Tab" in a disco in Ballina in 1996, we would go up to the bar, order a drink, point at Noel and walk away. The locals were very puzzeled by the Dublin guys getting free drink. Noel is Captain for life due to the fact that everybody listens to him and would never dream of embarrassing him or disagreeing with him. A true gentleman.
Noel has no ambition to win the weekend away because he does not consider himself a golfer. He is very happy when he is at least in contention in one day games. In Spain in 2006 he was delighted with finishing 3rd one day.
2008 will be a special year for Noel and we will try to ensure he has a well deserved reward. Noel has said he ill be coming with us for the 2014 weekend.
